Help for Living with an Unbeliever

Stephanie raised an interesting point in her article about being careful what you share with others. This is especially important in the case of an unbelieving spouse. A lot of damage can be done when the unlebelivign spouse finds out their situation is being talked about and prayed about by others.

You may see it I as concern, but it can tend to make them feel they are being judged by you and those others and found wanting. Sop keep confidentiality and don’t divulge too much of your personal situation and relationship with your spouse. On the other hand, you need some support so you do not feel alone, so it is good to have one or two trusted people you can share with. But, you need to be sure they understand about confidentiality and not blabbing to others.

Lastly what you and your spouse do will affect your children. Children as Molly pointed out will want to know why Dad doesn’t come to church etc. When they get older, boys in particular, may then follow decide to follow dad’s example figuring this is what men do. I have seen this happen repeatedly. That will then cause further conflict and separation in the family.

The other thing is to teach your children about the importance of dating and marrying a believer. It’s not something that is talks about is preached about as often as it should be. I’ve seen in family the heartache and problems this can bring. Warn of the dangers and problems ahead. That’s not going to always stop them making this mistake but it might cause them to think more clearly. Firstly, you don’t want them to experience the heartache you have.

Don’t give up. One woman I know prayed for 26 years before her husband finally came to faith. Another didn’t live to see it happen but he came to faith after she dies because he saw the love and practical support from her church for him after her death. They happy fact is they will be re-united one day in heaven.
What a joyful re-union that will be.
