Helping Your Daughter with Personal Progress

The Personal Progress program that the Young Women work through is a wonderful program. I was called to serve with the Young Women shortly after the church implemented the new program. I was and still am so impressed with the changes that the program underwent. I think that the best change is that nearly every experience has some sort of self-reflection or actual application in the young woman’s life.

As a parent or young women’s leader, it can be hard to help the young women progress forward, since so much of the book is personal application, individual reading or journal writing. But that does not mean that there are not ways to encourage the young women to accomplish their goals. One thing that will help your young woman is to have regular discussions about her progress and where she is going next. You might want to ask if she needs help in a particular area.

You might want to offer family home evening lessons on topics that your daughter wants to learn more about in order to achieve her goals. These can include meal planning, doing family history, and budgeting. If your daughter wants to learn something that you don’t know how to do (for example crocheting), you can help her find someone to teach her how. You might also want to give your daughter a chance to teach family home evening since several goals ask that you teach what you learned to someone else.

Young women’s leaders can also help by offering classes on weeknights that involve the skills that the young women are interested in learning. Regular interviews with the girls are also helpful. As a young woman finished up her personal progress she should find that she is prepared to face the tasks ahead of her as she enters adulthood. What suggestions do you have to help encourage young women with Personal Progress?
