Lately we have been contemplating hiring a handyman to help us with some of the many projects around and outside our home. These are projects that are tough to prioritize into our project list for a couple of reasons. They are either of a non-emergency nature, they aren’t enjoyable to do and therefore get put off, they were started but not finished, or they just aren’t on my husband’s list to do, even though I would like to have them done.
If you are thinking of hiring a handyman or handywoman to get some of your projects done, you should know a few things:
- Although many handymen say that no job is too small, they usually appreciate it when there is enough work to keep them busy for at least the whole day. If you have a lot of work, the handyman may discount his rate in appreciation for the work. Gather your list together and see how much you can add to it. Then you can discuss the details with your handyman.
- The list is very important. Call it a laundry list, a project list or even a honey do list. List the projects in the order that you would like them completed, in case your handyman can only spare so much time. Combine like items to make it easier, such as painting multiple rooms or installing a doorbell and a garage door opener.
- Your handyman may not be able to do everything. If the handyman isn’t comfortable with a job, don’t push him to take it on. You may wind up very disappointed in the results. You may also give the impression of being a demanding employer.
- Based on your projects and your budget, make a determination about hiring a professional full-time handyman or a part-time handyman who takes jobs on the side. The full-time handyman may have a broader range of skills, while the part-timer may be less expensive.
