History and Hauntings in New Hampshire

Families with roots in New England may have American roots that date back quite a few generations. New England was one of the first places in America to be settled by Europeans, so many of the first families of European descent to live in America made their homes there. Fortunately, the history of New England is very well preserved in museums, books, monuments, and other forms of historical memorabilia. If your family has roots in New England, particularly in New Hampshire, you may find it interesting to know that there are walking tours where you can explore the lore and history of some very interesting places in New Hampshire.

A company called New England Curiosities has a variety of walking tours with historical themes. One tour explores the waterfront of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I have been to the waterfront, but I did not realize that there are a Naval shipyard and an abandoned Naval prison there. I can only imagine what kinds of dark secrets that area holds. Another tour that the company offers only during the month of October is called the Legends, Ghosts, and Graves tour. This tour also takes place in Portsmouth, and it explores the hauntings and the history of historic Portsmouth. Tour attendees can learn whether there are ghosts in the Governor’s mansion and what secrets lie beneath the streets of the city, in addition to visiting New Hampshire’s oldest graveyard – the Point of Graves. The tour company has other tours too, including a tour of Portsmouth’s historic pubs and a tour of the seacoast’s haunted lighthouses.

As with any product or service that I come across that I share with you in case you may be interested in it, I must tell you that I have never been on a New England Curiosities walking tour. I have no affiliation with the company, and they have given me nothing of value in exchange for mention of their services here. I have shared this information solely for the purpose of informing genealogists and history lovers about events that they may find interesting or useful.
