Hollywood’s Most Married, Part 1

While I am thinking about Hollywood marriages, let’s talk about those in love with being in love. Or, at least those in love with being married. When we talk about Hollywood’s most married, the first person to come to mind is probably Elizabeth Taylor. Truly a stunning beauty, old saying “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” never applied to Liz as she has been married 8 times.

Liz married her first husband, Conrad Hilton, at the tender age of 18. But, the marriage would not last long enough for Liz to become Paris and Nicole’s grandmother. It was over in only 9 months. Her second marriage, to Michael Wilding, lasted almost 5 years and produced two children. It appeared Liz had found happiness with third husband Michael Todd until he was tragically killed in a plane crash just a year after they married. Hold on folks because this is where it starts to get a little twisted. The widow Todd, distraught with sorrow, turned to her best friends, Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. Debbie and Eddie were married with two small children, but they knew Liz needed a shoulder to cry on. Eddie lent a little more than a shoulder and he soon left Debbie for Liz. Liz and Eddie married in 1959. Being Jewish, Eddie may not know about karma, but it certainly came around to bite him soon enough. While filming the disastrous Cleopatra in 1962, Liz fell in love with equally married costar Richard Burton. She divorced Eddie Fisher in March of 1964 and nine days later married Richard. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but even those couldn’t save the marriage and it ended after ten years. They divorced in 1974, but rekindled the flame and remarried in October of 1975. The second union lasted less than a year.

Liz became a politician’s wife when she married Senator John Warner in 1976. One of her longer marriages, Liz was married to Warner for almost six years. After almost ten years of being single, Liz married her eighth husband, Larry Fortensky in 1991. Larry was an unlikely choice for Liz, a construction worker whom she met while in rehab. They remained married for five years, divorcing in 1996.

It appears that Liz will not add a ninth marriage to her dossier, but never say never. One can only hope that she found some happiness within all those marriages. After all, if Liz did not have short marriages, she could not be one of Hollywood’s favorite serial brides.
