Home Business Spotlight: Web Content Writer

Today I am going to be talking about an area of writing that I am quite familiar with, web content writing. This is a growing field, especially since many companies are utilizing websites to market their business.

Content writers provide relevant information, with most of the focus on selling or endorsing that company’s products and services. My work happens to be with law firms. I not only write articles pertaining to various areas of the law (medical malpractice, personal injury, slip and fall accidents, etc.) but I also write blogs and FAQ’s.

To become a web content writer you will need to provide quality content, since that is what will help sell or endorse a company’s goods. The better the content, the more business they will get and the more money they will make.

Web content writers must not only promote or sell the services and products but they must inform the readers. It must be enticing enough that it keeps a potential customer lingering on the website. The longer they remain, the more likely they will buy or enlist in the services provided.

Not only does the writer need to provide quality content but it must focus on search engine optimization (SEO). In fact, many times you will find job listings that specifically mention providing SEO content. This means the content must contain relevant phrases and/or keywords that are mostly likely to be used when someone conducts a web search.

This is what helps move the website up in search engine ranking and indexing. In other words, a potential customer is more likely to land on that webpage. You can write quality content but without proper SEO, it won’t help the business.

You must also be able to provide content that is easy to read and quickly provides all the information that is necessary. You can’t write pages and pages on one topic and expect to keep a customer engaged. You also can’t write in technical terms that a potential customer wouldn’t understand.

Because you are producing text online, it also must contain short paragraphs and eye-catching headlines. When someone reads something in print, they usually read it word-for-word but online, text is generally scanned.

Some businesses will hire independent web content writers and others will hire a company that specializes in SEO web content writing. I happen to work for a company that specifically works in producing SEO web content.

If you are working as a web content writer, what advice do you have for others who might be interested in this field of writing?
