Home Decor: Lampshades

If your lamps are a little tired or boring but you don’t really want to spend the money on new lighting, try giving your lampshades a little update to add interest. You can create lots of fun and even funky new looks by updating your current lampshades or by using items you might not normally think about using to replace them.

Baskets

Turn a uniquely shaped basket upside down and remove the bottom. This not only creates an interesting new look but also adds more texture to the space. Add hardware as necessary, or remove the bulb fitting from your old lampshade and use it in your new one.

Wastebaskets

Many small wastebaskets are the perfect size and a good shape for making lampshades. Choose a clean, new wastebasket in a designer style or decorate one to coordinate with other accessories. Turn it upside down and remove the bottom.

Try a New Shape

Another good way to update lampshades is by selecting new ones with more modern shapes. There are many stylish designs to choose from that are very attractive.

Colored Light Bulbs

Changing from white to colored light bulbs will also change the look and feel of your existing lamps and shades and create a pretty glow. *This option is not recommended for task lighting.

Update Existing Lampshades

Use spray adhesive to recover a lampshade with new fabric or just remove the current fabric to add cutouts from wallpaper or border. You can also draw your own designs with paint markers or try a faux painting technique. If you tend to go for subdued colors and prints, step outside the subtle zone and try something whimsical, inject some bright color, or maybe even use a great animal print. Adding trim is another good option.

Updating your lighting with new or dressed up lampshades is a great way to experiment with color, texture, or print, starting with one small area.
