Home Fire Safety: Are You Prepared?

A home fire could happen at anytime, anywhere. Some common fires at home occur because of a lit cigarette, unattended candles, Christmas trees, and simple things of that sort. It could also be a child playing with matches or a lighter, or even arson. There are a variety of events that can cause a fire in your home. The important thing is that you and your family are prepared. Not only will everyone feel safer, but you will be ready and know what to do should a fire take place.

What you need:

1. Fire extinguishers on every floor, as well as one in the kitchen. A lot of fires will begin in the kitchen.

2. Working smoke alarms on each floor, as well as one in each bedroom. These need to be tested at least once a month. Some parents are now buying smoke alarms that record your voice for your children’s bedrooms. If your child doesn’t respond to the beeping sound from a smoke alarm when they’re sleeping, these might help.

3. A way to get out of a second floor window, such as a rope ladder.

4. Emergency numbers near every phone, though you should get out, then call. This should be used for small, controlled fires.

5. A family fire escape plan: what to do, where to go, how to stay safe, etc.

Having the supplies you need is extremely important, because you could potentially stop a fire before it consumes your home. You can save you and your family’s lives. The most important thing is that you and your family have an escape plan that it practiced on a regular basis, such as those they have in school, but with more detail.
