Homemade Halloween Costumes for Kids

This article is a follow-up to Nicole’s Great Cheap Halloween Costumes for the Truly Frugal Mom. In case you wanted just a few more ideas for what to dress your kids in this year, read on….

* Train conductor

Start with a pair of overalls, a solid-colored long-sleeved dress shirt and a red bandana to wear around the neck. The hardest part to putting this costume together might be finding just the right hat to complete it. If necessary, you can make a solid-colored baseball hat work. I actually found a great deal on train conductor hats on Ebay.

* Ewok

This is what we dressed our son as for Halloween last year. To put together the costume, you will need any furry animal costume. You may need to remove the tail or alter the ears to make the costume work as an Ewok. Next, find some leather remnants from a scrap fabric store. Use these to make a hood to fit over your child’s head or the head of the costume. As finishing touches, make a spear, knapsack, or walking stick for your little Ewok to hold. Dressing your child as an Ewok is a great way to recycle an old furry animal costume.

* Peter Pan

Peter Pan is an easy costume to put together yourself without spending much money. Buy a green t-shirt and pants from a thrift store. Cut the pants with a jagged edge below the knee. Make a simple cone-shaped hat out of sturdy felt. Attach a piece of red fabric around the rim of the hat and secure a feather inside.

* Scarecrow

You can make an inexpensive and cute scarecrow costume without hardly buying anything at all. Start with an old set of clothes–perhaps some overalls and a plaid shirt. Cut the edges in zigzags and add patches of old, multicolored fabrics. Sew raffia strips into the fabric so it comes out at the arms and the legs of the costume. Your child may need to wear another set of clothes underneath to keep the raffia from itching. Complete the costume with a beat up straw hat.
