Homeschool Laws for the State of Delaware: Option 2
*Before I begin this article regarding homeschooling options for Delaware, I want to begin by stating that it is your responsibility to research the law for yourself. I am relaying the available and current information that is subject to change. Delaware has three legal options for homeschooling. This article will focus on Option 2.
The compulsory age of school attendance is between the ages of 5 and 16. School may be delayed if it is in the best interest of the child and as long as there is previous school authorization.
The second option for homeschooling in the state of Delaware is to establish a “multi family homeschool”. This is separate families coming together and homeschooling as a unit, when the children are not related to each other (as brother and sister). Under the “multi-family homeschool” option, one person will act as a liaison for the multi-family homeschool and will be responsible for reporting attendance and enrollment of the children to the Department of Education.
Attendance requirements include 180 days per year and the required subjects to be taught are the same as for public school. There are no required qualifications for parents to hold to teach the children. Attendance reports must be made before July 31st of each year and an annual statement of enrollment must be submitted as of the last school day in September. These must be submitted on the required forms provided by the Department of Education. There are no other required records to be kept and testing is not required.
