Homeschooling in Washington D.C.

I am continuing the series started awhile ago by another blogger, regarding home schooling laws in each state. I plan to blog about them alphabetically, however, if you’re in Wyoming, you don’t have to wait for me to post the information! Just leave a comment letting me know where you are.

This is not legal advice. As someone who lives in a state that is highly regulated, I cannot emphasize enough the need for you to advocate for yourself and make a point to know your state laws. While the school district will most likely provide you with a printed copy of the laws and regulations for home schooling, a local home schooling group can be a valuable asset when it comes to navigating your way through the system.

In Washington D.C., your only home schooling option is to “provide private instruction not affiliated with an educational institution”. This means that you as the parents, would not need to affiliate yourself with an umbrella organization. Your homeschool is considered “private instruction.”

Compulsory Age: The year your child is 5 before December 31st until the child is 18.

Attendance: When public school is in session.

Subjects: None.

Teacher Qualifications: None.

Notice: Notice is not required, unless you are pulling your child out of public school.
I actually found conflicting information and after reading the laws, I believe what I have here is correct. I believe a letter of intent is only required if you are pulling your child out of school.
Record keeping: An accurate daily record of the attendance shall be kept by every teacher who gives instruction privately and must be made available for inspection upon request.

Testing: None.
