Host an Artwork Exchange

We’ve talked about hosting all kinds of exchanges from the cookie exchange (which doesn’t have to be just for Christmas) to the back to school clothing exchanges and swapping accessories and holiday decorations. Now, it’s time to talk about an artwork exchange.

If you have recently moved or redecorated, it’s a great time to host an exchange. You can trade off some pieces that no longer make much of an impact and gain some items to add some sparkle to your new spaces.

Pricey Pieces

First, if you have valuable artwork, you do not want to trade it with the neighbors for a blown up photo of their prize roses, no matter how attractive the picture frame is. No, you’re better off looking around for a gallery or looking online for a true art exchange that deals in gallery worthy pieces (and prices) if you hope to trade or sell something of extensive value.

Moderately Costly Custom Artwork

Custom pieces are fair game for an art exchange, if for no other reason than you must assume that you won’t get out of them what you put into them. Custom-made pieces are made precisely for you or your home, so they won’t be as valuable to other people, even though they may bring a nice trade if someone else finds your custom artwork attractive.

Prints, Paintings, and Popular Art

Among these items, you will find typical home décor pieces. While some may well be attractive, they aren’t usually very formal or expensive. You should be able to conduct a reasonable trade with typical art pieces like decorative bowls, paintings, framed prints and such, allowing everyone to return home with something “new” (to them) or at least something to add interest to a space in their home.

*You may want to set price limits at the outset or you may simply wish to allow people to bargain at whim, especially if homemade artwork is involved. Be sure to have everyone drop their items off in advance, so you can set things up attractively (and so you can check out the goods before everyone else does).
