In the summer, the benefits of a ceiling fan are obvious. The ceiling fan circulates air and give you a nice breeze that makes you feel cooler. It can also keep away pesky biting insects, so having a fan on the porch has two major benefits. Plus if you are comfortable outside, you won’t need to run the air conditioning inside for more savings.
In the winter, you can reverse the blades and run the fan to circulate warm air down from the ceiling and toward the living space, making you feel more comfortable with few cold spots and have less of a need to crank the heat.
Ceiling fans are relatively inexpensive to purchase, and they cost very little to run. To get the most benefit out of your ceiling fan, the optimize it so you save the most money, you should keep a few things in mind.
Ceiling fans are all about air flow, so the height of your ceiling is an important factor. If your ceilings are less than eight or none feet high, you will need to get either a hugger fan that mounts directly into the ceiling or a low-ceiling adapter. If your ceiling is too high, you will need to install a downrod to bring the fan into proper position.
For ceiling fans that go on the porch where humidity or rain may be an issue, you will need to either choose one that is rated for “damp” or “wet,” if the fan might come in contact with water.
Choose a fan that is suited for the size of your room. The length of the blade will determine how much the fan can cool. If your space is less than 100 square feet, choose blades that are 40 to 42 inches. For rooms up to 140 square feet, the blades should be 42 to 48 inches. For larger rooms, you may need more than one ceiling fan.
