And you thought ESPN was bizarre.
Just when you thought it was safe to turn to the cyberspace for baby name inspiration comes the story of Like Alder.
Not Lee-kay or Lee-kai; it’s Like as in: I really like that name.
Apparently an Israeli couple really, really, really liked the Like button on Facebook and decided to name their newborn daughter after it.
No joke.
According to news reports, when Lior and his wife Vardit Adler posted a picture of their darling daughter on Facebook, they got 40 “likes,” which is a good thing considering the couple looked to the social networking site’s “Like” button as inspiration for their offspring’s moniker.
Now, before you get all judgy, consider that the couple is known for being innovative and irreverent.
“In our opinion it’s the modern equivalent of the name Ahava [Love],” Lior told the Israeli newspaper Maariv. “It’s just my way of saying to my fantastic daughter, ‘Love’.”
Lior went on to tell reporters that it was extremely important for the couple to select a one-of-a-kind name for their child. Needless to say, the Adler’s baby girl is the first person in Israel to be named “Like.”
By the way, the couple’s other two children also feature unusual names. Their older daughter is named Pie (as in the dessert), while their son is Vash (Hebrew for honey).
Not surprisingly, Pie and Like are a far cry from the most popular names for girls in Israel, which currently include Noa, Maya and Tamar.
Despite only having 100 friends on the social networking site that served as the inspiration for their newborn’s name, Lior and Vardit say they stand by their decision and wouldn’t consider changing their daughter’s name. The couple says Like rolls off the tongue nicely, plus it represents a sign of our times.
“If once people gave Biblical names and that was the icon, then today this is one of the most famous icons in the world,” Lior told news reporters.
And it’s not like the Adlers could name their daughter after the social networking site since someone already beat them to it. According to reports, earlier this year an Egyptian father named his firstborn girl “Facebook” to honor the site’s role in Egypt’s revolution.
Hopefully, Like is as cute as a button and doesn’t rebel against her parents in the future for naming her after Facebook’s famous feature.
What do you think of the name Like? Do you like?
