How Important is the Military ID

I’ve talked about how important a military ID card is but lets really take a look. I’m not meaning to be mean on any level but it is funny the things I noticed this week. As a child, growing up in the military meant you always carried your military ID card in your pocket, wallet or around your neck on one of those beaded chains. Do you remember that? They would even stamp a small hole in the ID somewhere so it could be looped through a necklace. Back then, I hate saying that (makes me feel old), you couldn’t buy anything without an ID card.

Has times changed? Some would have to say it depends whom the store clerk is and what type of day it is. I’ve walked inside the commissary to get something, even went through putting all my groceries on the little conveyor belt only to be turned away because my ID was either at home or in the car. Very embarrassing but it does happen, too much to some of us moms. Tonight, my husband was due to be at work and he was leaving with plenty of time to spare. Guess what? He couldn’t find his military ID, for many you probably wonder what the significance of this little card is. For those in the military it is a way of saying you belong on the base, basically a driver’s license. Without this card you just aren’t welcome, not unless someone on base represents you. Not to worry, he ended up finding it but it shows you a bit of importance. He would’ve left the base and got stuck at the gate and had to wait for me to pick him up if he ended up leaving without noticing he didn’t have his card on him.

So, why is it my son, (only 9) can go into our store at the corner without ID and yet I can’t? Is it because they’ve seen him with me? Or just because he’s gotten lucky each time?
