How Quickly We Forget

You forget. You really do. When you start thinking about wanting to have another baby you forget how hard the sleep deprivation is. You forget how it’s impossible to get anything accomplished other than baby holding. You forget how you have to eat standing up now and it’s usually whatever you can grab. You forget the sore breasts and the loads of diaper changing. You forget the smell of baby spit up that you and baby seem to always have on you. You sometimes forget your husband. Why do we forget? I guess it’s mother nature’s way of making sure that we will have more.

But there are wonderful things that you forget too.

You forget how magical it is to see your baby for the first time. You forget the amazement at watching them grow so fast. You forget that joy it brings you when you see that first smile or laugh. You forget how instantly in love you become with that baby the moment he is placed in your arms. You forget how sweet it is to show off your new bundle to friends and family. You forget that there is nothing that can warm your heart more than having a baby fall asleep on you and feeling their soft baby breath on your neck. Those are the things that make motherhood in those first few weeks bearable. Because, it really is so hard.

I just had my third. He is 8 weeks old now. These past 8 weeks have been some of the hardest of my life. But, they have been some of the happiest too. I’m glad I forget all of the little things (and some of the big ones too) because it makes everyday magical, and special again. It can also make some days more difficult. I’ve realized something. It’s OK to forget. Because it truly does help me to take it all in again. Be in the moment. And share some of those moments with you. And realize how blessed I am.
