How to Become a Professional Organizer

Are you gifted at organizing? Did you know that you could actually make a career of this? There is even a “National Association of Professional Organizers” which is a way to become certified. I guess in any field of work certification makes you seem more, well, professional.

At one time I actually considered this line of work. Organization is one of my gifts but some of my family members think it’s a sickness. Like the time I spent several hours in my kitchen organizing my spices. I couldn’t stand that I had several containers of certain spices so I combined them all into one container and labeled them. My oldest son walked by and said, “Now that’s too organized.”

Can you really be too organized? Not in my eyes and I trust that one day my children will catch on to the same gift.

At any rate, OnlineOrganizing.com has a test you can take to determine if you would make a good professional organizer. If so, this is probably the best website to kick start a career in organizing.

One way you could start off is to offer your services to a friend who won’t be offended that you ask. It’s up to you about charging a small fee or just using it as an opportunity to gain some experience. You just might be surprised to find that you have family and friends who are absolutely clueless when it comes to organizing and would be more than glad to take you up on your offer.

Now one way you can “sell” yourself as an organizer is to have pictures available of your home. Of course, this is assuming you have an organized home. But this is a great way to give clients an idea on how you keep your home organized. You will at least appear to be legitimate.

You might want to create a flyer, a website or a business card that provides some information on your services. It’s important to think about the services you are offering because organizing might just mean some cleaning or painting.

With some drive and spreading the word around, you just might be able to make a career out of organizing.
