How to Learn More About Your Spouse: Reading Together

Among other things, October is National Book Month and Reading Group Month. I know we’re on the very last day of October, but an idea came to me the other day about how these month celebrations could enrich a marriage on any day of any month: start your own exclusive book club together, just the two of you!

“In this book I’m reading…”

I’m almost done reading The Secret, but I’ve found myself referring to it a lot lately.

Two weekends ago I was driving and got a flat. I’ve worried about that happening ever since we moved here because (a) there’s lots of new house construction with lots of nails on the roads, and (b) the two-lane roads have no shoulders and I’ve always wondered where I’d pull off.

I got my answer. (And luckily Wayne was with me to change the tire. I sort of knew how to do it, but after watching him wrestle with the lug nuts I don’t think I’d have had the strength to move them.)

I told Wayne it was just like what I’d been learning from The Secret. I attracted the flat because I’d been thinking about it.

He didn’t understand what I was saying because he hasn’t read the book, but because he’s been hearing about it so much he’s going to give it a go after I’m done.

Pick a Book, Any Book

Some couples have very similar reading tastes, some don’t. Generally Wayne prefers nonfiction of the finance/accounting/investing variety. I enjoy nonfiction too, but about ghosts, or uplifting things like Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance and Dr. Wayne Dyer’s 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace, and I also like genre fiction like romance and mysteries.

But once in a while one of us stumbles across a book that’s out of the reading realm of the other that we highly recommend they read. Once we do, then we have great discussions about them. Which ultimately helps us learn more about each other.

Oh, The Things You’ll Learn

For instance, after reading Wayne’s recommendations I’ve learned more about money and Wayne’s views about it, which helps me understand his savings mentality and strategies. He’s learned I have a very spiritual side, which has helped him see the world in a softer light.

Questions for Readers

Do you and your mate have the same reading tastes? Do you swap books? If so, what have you learned about your partner? If not, would you consider reading something they recommend?
