How to Rebound from A Job Loss- Part II

Part II continues with additional tips on surviving a job loss.

Update Your Resume

It’s always a good idea to keep your resume updated, especially if you think you might become a victim of a layoff. Do it while you are employed when your mind will be clearer and you’re not worrying about finances and other issues. Start by compiling a list of what you’ve accomplished in your present job, focusing on achievements. In particular, focus on quantifiable achievements. Then do the same for previous positions. If you need help with your resume there are many good sources to be found on the Internet or check out a resume writing book from your local library. If you still feel something’s missing, consult a professional resume writer. Your local unemployment office and many college career centers may also be able to assist with this task.

Finally, if you are laid off, ask for a letter of recommendation from your former employer. Most will be more than happy to write one for you. You can make copies and include them with your resume when applying for positions or take a copy along on your interview.

Network, Network, Network

Strive to maintain a strong career network. If you do find yourself laid off, these contacts will be invaluable. You can develop your network of contacts from church members, family, friends of your parents, organizations, alumni associations and/or professional groups. Almost anyone can be a potential source of a job lead so don’t discount anyone.

Above all keep a positive attitude throughout your ordeal. Don’t play the blame game or sit around feeling sorry for yourself if you are laid off. Don’t take it personal. When there are layoffs it’s almost always an economic decision and nothing personal against you. So as they say, get up, brush yourself off and start all over again. A better opportunity might just be waiting for you so go out and get it!
