One of the things that I did for my first few weeks as a mom was to set up a little baby station on the pack and play that I kept by the couch where I was resting. The first few days at home can be hard because you are very sore, regardless of whether you had a vaginal birth or a cesarean. Keeping everything in one location can make a world of difference when its hard to move from one room to the next.
The pack and play had a changing table, which I kept stocked with diapers and wipes, as well as a few washcloths to catch those unexpected fountains. I also stocked the table with a tube of A&D ointment to care for his circumcision and alcohol wipes to clean his belly button.
I set the pack and play near the living room couch, which was also stocked with necessities. I had a few books and magazines, my latest crochet project and the TV remotes, for all those hours of feeding the baby and resting. My pillow and blankets were on the couch so I could sleep as much as possible. I also kept plenty of burp rags on hand.
The coffee table was my dinner table for the first week or two. I was never without a full glass of water, since I was always thirsty at first.
Having everything I needed all in one little area really helped me by limiting the amount of walking or stair climbing I had to do. I was able to do most of my tasks from the comfort of my couch. It made recovery a lot easier to deal with. I think the only thing I will do differently next time is organize all my supplies in a nice little basket that I can move to another room if I want. That way, if I want to move the show to the bedroom, it’s as simple as moving a basket and a baby. That manageable!
