How to Spice Up Your Holiday Party

Tired of the same ol’, same ol’ Christmas parties that feature tone-deaf Uncle Jack singing karaoke in the corner and Aunt Lucy forcing you to try her latest tofu creation? Then, consider hosting your own holiday fiesta this season with a spicy theme.

If you don’t want to go whole hog by hosting an extravagant costume night (think elves, reindeer and Christmas movie characters), then go simple by decorating in a single color and having guests dress in red and green.

Other theme options include:

Hawaiian Christmas

I was born and raised in Hawaii, and while we don’t typically greet Santa on the beach on Christmas Day, that doesn’t mean you can’t make your guests feel like they are vacationing in the tropics at your Hawaiian themed holiday party.

Set a beach dress code and hand out real or artificial lei at the door. You can even set-up a place near your entry area where guests can swap out their winter boots for slippers or sandals.

Decorating for a Hawaiian themed Christmas party is a cinch. Simply place inflatable palm trees adorned with Christmas lights around the house. You could also fill a few kiddie pools with sand or top with ice and use as a large cooler for tropical drinks. Don’t forger to load your CD player with Don Ho classics, including Mele Kalikimaka.

Menu ideas include shrimp, pineapple glazed ham or roasted pig. For dessert, consider serving coconut cream pie, guava cake or fresh fruit kabobs.

Blue Christmas

For a more sophisticated soiree, consider hosting a “Blue Christmas” themed party. You can decorate your home (including your Christmas tree) with blue lights and string blue garland around banisters and along the mantle. Embellish your table with blue place settings and don’t forget to play Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” in the background.

Top off the night by serving an array of blue libations and menu items, including Blue Martinis, blueberry glazed pork, blueberry cheesecake, and blue corn tortillas filled with cheese, chicken, onions, peppers and salsa.
