I Can’t Believe I get to Homeschool my Kids!

As I chatted with another homeschooling mom yesterday at the YMCA poolside, we both were struck with a sense of awe and thankfulness that we get to homeschool our kids. Not only do we have the right to homeschool, but we often feel it is our duty. It is also an amazing blessing that we have found ourselves in a position where homeschooling is possible.

There are so many parents that want to homeschool, but are not in a position where they feel they can either financially, physically, or emotionally. There are many women who could homeschool if they wanted but would rather jump from a flaming airplane. To be in a position where I both can, and want to homeschool, I feel extremely fortunate.

If I were to compare the way I feel about being able to homeschool, I would look at my second favorite past time: shopping. Can you imagine being able to shop without doing the mental calculation as to how much money you can spend? Can you imaging being able to buy anything you want without worry that your debit card would be rejected? This is how I feel about homeschooling. I feel I can teach my kids whatever I feel they need to learn, or whatever they want to learn, without checking the public school account balance. “Is that on the curriculum this year? Are they up to this point in school yet? There are questions I do not have to ask. Just as I would love to be able to shop without restraint, I AM able to teach without restraint. In fact, my kids are even able to teach me.

As I share my joy for my great fortune of being a homeschooling parent, I feel I must share an opinion from a mom who has chosen private school instead. As we spoke last night about how she came to the decision to use private school for your youngest after having problems in public school with the previous two, I could not help but think about how fortunate she was to be in position to choose a prestigious private school for her kids. The school is Christian, has a family atmosphere, and an excellent curriculum. My friend is truly blessed to be able to make the best educational choice for her family as well.

Is there something that you love doing and feel blessed and amazed that you actually can?
