Those eight little words are not positive for any married individual to be considering when they are married. After all, if only I weren’t married indicates you are seriously not thinking about being married. It also indicates a certain level of unhappiness with your marriage.
Beyond That
Beyond the negative implications of the phrase: if only I weren’t married, then I would … indicates a severe problem with your own level of self-confidence. The reason I stand by this is because I had that thought in my own head for about fifteen minutes once and then I spent about an hour taking a good long hard look at all the things I did do because I was married and because I had the support.
Because I’m married, I have been able to:
- Finish my college degree
- Stay home with my daughter while she was young and developing
- Wrote two books and am in the middle of a third
- Launch a freelance writing career that fulfilled my creative cravings
- Learn a lot more about growing a garden
- Learn how to ski
- Travel with a partner who enjoys the traveling as much as I do
- Discover a more optimistic outlook on people in general
While it’s true, I might have done some or all of these things without being married. I did them because I had the support and respect – and sometimes just the challenge my husband. So the next time you have the thought above – take a few minutes and think about all the things you have been able to do.
You just might be amazed by how much you have been able to do because you were married.
