In Good Company: Part 1

Homeschooling is not the proper choice for every parent. Yet for many the choice to homeschool is often questioned by society. Many wonder if you can properly educate your child at home. I certainly believe that is a fair question. Many wonder if they are properly educated themselves to embark on homeschooling. Again, I believe this to be another fair question. While there are good and bad examples of homeschooling situations, it is nice to sometimes provide a bit of encouragement by showing the good company your children share with many who were homeschooled.

Many who decide to “show off” a list of homeschooled individuals are criticized for using individuals who were homeschooled before public schooling was an option or during a time when it was the norm to be schooled at home. While I understand the intention of the argument, I find it lacks in proving anything. The fact still remains that these individuals were homeschooled. Moreover, they were homeschooled in a time before public education so resources and influences from educated individuals were not readily available. The parents whom the task of homeschooling was thrust upon would be considered less able to homeschool in the opinion of naysayers today. Yet, those parents were able to raise individuals who shaped our country and in many cases how the world works.

While many of those listed had homeschooling as their only choice that is not the case for all on the list. One shining example of a modern day homeschooled student is Tim Tebow. Another example of a student considered by his teacher to be “addled” yet grew to change the world once educated at home is Thomas Edison. How many parents today have children who do not quite fit the mold of a traditional school setting such as Thomas Edison or Albert Einstein?

A list of famous and accomplished homeschooled individuals is not a reason to homeschool. However, it can encourage you that even before public schooling great minds could be developed without a certified teacher. It may also encourage you to know that many considered to be unable to be educated by professionals were successfully educated at home such as Thomas Edison.
