Introduction to the Gospel Questions Series

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an unusual church. It’s okay to think so – in fact, we’ll be the first to admit it. In some ways we’re very like other religions and in some ways, we’re radically different.

Many people who are not of our faith have questions concerning our practices, beliefs, and values. We’re more than happy to answer these questions and seek to share our perspective while maintaining a respect for the beliefs of others. Unfortunately, from time to time, feelings are hurt while comparing ideologies, a situation that is sad and not productive, and leaves both people with a bad taste in their mouths. This is not the purpose of sharing the gospel, nor is it the aim or goal.

I’m starting a blog series here on Families.com to answer common questions people have about the LDS faith. Each question I address will be answered with the view in mind of educating others about our beliefs, not in an attempt to convert, but in an attempt to spread understanding about this unusual religion. If you have any questions you would like to have answered, please leave them in the comment trail and I will answer them for you. Where my own understanding fails, I will turn to those who know more than myself so you may get the answers you need.

Many of the deeper questions can only be answered after much fasting and prayer, and those answers are personal to you. Hence, there will be some questions that I won’t be able to answer. But on matters of church policy, doctrine, and scripture, I will be able to answer you.

Join me tomorrow as I begin this series with the most frequently asked question: “Are Mormons Christians?” Other topics for next week will include “Why Do Mormons Have Temples?” and “What Do Mormons Believe About the Godhead?”
