As we get older, we learn the importance of Genealogy. As kids, maybe we didn’t realize what Genealogy was all about. We may not have appreciated knowing about our ancestors until we were older. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t teach our children about Genealogy so that they can appreciate learning about their ancestry from an early age.
There are many activities that we can do with children of all ages in order to teach them about Genealogy. Let’s look at some ideas and projects for different age groups.
For young children, they may enjoy completing the teddy bear family tree, available to download free from Kids Turn Central. This is a standard four generation family tree which can be printed and filled in. It uses teddy bears as ancestors and is fun to fill in. Using colorful pens to write in names and information will make this even more artistic. This also makes a cute completed project, suitable for framing or laminating.
Older children may be more interested in books that are written to guide them through building their family tree. One example is the book titled “Me and My Family Tree” by Joan Sweeney. Another option for older children would be a trip to the library to look at Genealogy books and make their own family tree. Remember to take a notebook and pen along so they can work on the project while in the library.
Teenagers are old enough to appreciate the research involved in Genealogy. A research project is a great activity to share together. Split up the research and have each person take a surname. Make it fun by seeing who can find the most facts.
When we teach our children about Genealogy at an early age, it will help them to appreciate knowing things about their ancestors. Encourage them to write down family stories and keep a journal or book of family history fun facts. They will appreciate having it at a later time.
