Is A Theme Cruise Right For You?

You’ve heard of Disney cruises, and Concert cruises, but what about Caviar cruises and Gothic cruises? Or, how about setting sail on a luxury ocean liner and being surrounded by passengers with pointed ears discussing the dangers of the Klingons? You guessed it—a voyage on a Star trek cruise.

Ahoy maties! Welcome to the wonderful world of theme cruises. In a previous blog I detailed the popularity of these high seas theme outings. Hitting the water with a purpose (besides getting a tan and indulging in all-you-can-eat-buffets) is a growing trend. In the past several years cruise lines have been targeting special interest groups–from foodies to football fans, and the results have been phenomenal.

According to travel experts, theme cruise have exploded into a multi-million dollar business. But, the question remains… is a theme cruise right for you? If you have a passion for fine wine and gourmet food, car racing, country music, or Elvis and you enjoy gliding in style on the high seas, then a theme cruise may be your ideal vacation.

One of the hottest theme cruises out there is dedicated to hard-core foodies. Crystal Cruises’ annual Wine and Food Festival, has a wait list of people aching to sink their teeth into haute cuisine. The entire cruise is dedicated to teaching budding gourmets how to create palette-pleasing masterpieces.

Regent Seven Seas also offers a decadent week aboard a “Chocolate Cruise.” Once the ship sails you can sample fine Valrhona on a ship packed with cocoa bean experts and pastry chefs. A nice bonus with the gourmet cruises is that the theme carries across ships and itineraries, so you can choose from a variety of destinations, including: Dubai to Rome, Copenhagen to London or Montreal to Miami at various times of the year.

If there is a downside of theme cruises it may be their popularity. Not all theme cruises run regularly, which means they fill up fast. Finding a spot on a theme cruise that has rabid followers, like the Star Trek-Seatrek, may be a challenge.

In my next blog I will provide a list of some of the most popular theme cruises on the water.
