Is it Just Me?

Take a moment to look through some of the magazines in your home, or if you don’t have any, pick up a copy of one of the prominent ones sometime.

Do you feel like it was written with someone like you in mind?

While many magazines do a great job of covering topics that a number of women can relate to (budget, diet, exercise, clothes, hair, make up, medicine, cooking/recipes, cleaning, decorating, raising kids, careers, cars, and more) there are times when I question what “everyday” or “average” really means.

I recently looked through some lists of what were supposed to be quick, easy, affordable, everyday dinner ideas. Well, I have to admit, I simply could not find any pine nut couscous in my pantry, nor did I have any saffron handy. No arugula or Belgian endive, no capers, and no gruyere cheese. I love to cook and I really like gruyere cheese. Some of the recipes sounded rather tasty, but frankly, I can’t remember ever having had these items on my typical weekly grocery list.

I picked up another magazine and began checking out all the latest styles for warm weather. Some of the flip-flops they make today are really quite cute, but when I’m in the market for flip-flops, I’m looking to spend like five bucks or so. Does anyone else find $24 (or more) a little high for flip-flops or is it just me?

My mind is busy multiplying $24 times 4 kids and 2 adults… and thinking that nearly $150 for flip-flops for the family is out of the question. I can think of other ways I’d rather spend that money, and besides, I can get each family member a pair for a fraction of that amount.

Then, there were some sandals and they really were great. However, I don’t see myself paying $100 for “everyday” sandals to run around outside or wear to a park or a picnic.

Some of the home décor options offered were pretty reasonable, but others seemed well beyond “average” to me. I also see things that just aren’t practical for everyday living. White carpet or seating doesn’t work in high traffic rooms, and it simply cannot be kept pristine under constant use. And, let’s face it, white doesn’t look good unless it is pristine. It doesn’t make sense to me unless the average person can afford to replace home décor elements frequently. Maybe I’m just not average.

I’m not even going to start on vacations…

Do these things seem typical or average to you? Is it just me?
