Is Scrapbooking Dying Out?

When you’re in the industry as long as I have been, you tend to see different trends come and go, different products reach their height and then die out, and meet people who are scrapaholics and then simply drop scrapbooking all together.

I was surprised to see a discussion on a message board which posed the question on whether the whole trend of scrapbooking was dying out. What I have to say to that, is simply no.

Whatever the evidence in question is or was, scrapbooking is here to stay. And now with the introduction of digital scrapbooking, it opened a whole new world for those that shied away from the expense and the mess before.

If the question was posed “Are some people sick of scrapbooking?” that would be a lot easier to remember. Do sports fanatics eventually get tired of sports? Do collectors sometimes lose interest in what they collect? Yes. Therefor, it doesn’t seem odd to me that someone might get tired of scrapbooking after awhile and shy away.

The stores keep appearing, the companies keep giving us new and innovative products to use, and the industry keeps growing with the addition of digital products to serve those that use it.

The closure of a long standing local scrapbook store does not signify the ending of a hobby such as this. With the competition so steep with online stores that can offer significant discounts, and larger scrapbook store chains cropping up everywhere, it becomes harder to compete. So if your local scrapbook store is closing, don’t take that as a sign that scrapbooking is on its way out. My local scrapbooking store is thriving, her prices are great, she keeps her costs to a minimum and carries the latest and greatest. There is something to be said about shopping in s smaller store. However, if you don’t have one, you can still shop online or visit one when you’re in an area that has one.

Scrapbooking is not dying out. It is not going anywhere. Pictures and memories will continue to be a huge part of our lives for generations to come. This will keep it all alive and well.
