Island Hopping in Hawaii

Mother Nature has not entered 2008 peacefully. As I write this my aunt and uncle in Lake Tahoe, California are dealing with blizzard-like conditions. Meanwhile, in Miami, Florida residents there are dealing with record low temperatures the likes of which they haven’t seen in more than five years. And here in the Midwest portion of the United States we are under severe fog alerts. (The fog is so thick here I can’t see the end of the driveway.) With all this inclement weather who wouldn’t want to escape to the always balmy and beautiful Hawaii?

If the rotten weather has got you booking a flight to the Aloha State right now take a minute to review the following information on noteworthy events taking place in the Islands over the next few weeks.

THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

The Royal Kona Resort at Kailua Bay located on the Big Island of Hawaii is offering an unbeatable winter rate. For $104 per night for two (taxes and service fees not included) you can stay at a luxurious resort complete with a private saltwater lagoon and an oceanfront swimming pool. Reservations must be made before February 28th.

Need a flight to Kona? TravelWorm.com is offering round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to Kona starting at $258 (taxes and service fees not included) per person.

If you are looking for a unique tour to take while you are visiting the Island of Hawaii I would highly recommend heading over to the Big Island Abalone Corp., which is now offering weekday tours of its 10-acre abalone farm.

Guests are allowed to hold, taste and purchase live abalone raised at the state’s only abalone farm. The tours take place 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The cost is $20 for adults, $17 for seniors, and free for those under 12.

MAUI

There’s never a bad time to visit Maui, but there are certain times of the year when the island offers signature events you don’t want to miss. If you are traveling to the Valley Isle in the next few months here are some of the events you can look forward to:

Whale Quest Kapalua. The massive celebration honors the migratory humpback whales with a host of free events that teach guests all about these ocean-dwelling mammals. The festival takes place at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua February 15th-17th.

Celebration of the Arts Festival. This year the big cultural event takes place on March 21-23. It includes demonstrations of authentic Hawaiian hula and chant, plus hands-on workshops in native Hawaiian art. There will also be a grand finale luau and show at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.

The Kapalua Wine & Food Festival. This signature event is celebrating its 27th anniversary this year by welcoming some of the world’s most famous winemakers; top master sommeliers and renowned chefs for tastings, gourmet cooking demonstrations and other events. The three-day event gets underway on June 26th and takes place at various resorts in Kapalua.
