It is Okay to “Fall Into” New Things

We talk a great deal about organization, moving forward and conscious planning here in the Single Parents blog; I thought it would be fair to talk about the other side of evolution. Sometimes, we really do “fall into” new career paths, relationships and life altering changes. This does not have to be a bad thing; in fact, some of the greatest developments in life can be surprises…

It is okay to accidentally find yourself in a new circumstance. I know that we single parents may be feeling like the more we can control things, the more intention and purpose we put into everything we do in our lives the better. After all, it might have been the lack of preparation and oversight that has got us into trouble in the past. There is a difference, however, between stumbling along blindly without a clue, and falling into a new direction while you are working on other areas of your life.

How many times have you heard people talk about the “good thing” that happened to them when they weren’t looking, or while they were working on something else. I know that I accidentally stumbled into my first career in nonprofit management and fundraising and while I have moved on—there were a lot of things that I liked about the work in my twenties and thirties. I’ve also known several people who went to college intent on majoring in one thing and then they took a class that inspired them and they headed off in a brand new direction—the discovery opened their eyes and changed their lives!

As long as you are not abdicated all choice and you continue to take responsibility for your life, it really is okay to “fall into” something new—after all, you might have had more of a hand in bringing it into your life than you realize.
