It’s Time for My Personal Insurance Review and Updates

Everyone has heard that the plumber’s house has leaky pipes, the electricians home needs new breakers and the window cleaners house has filthy windows! It always seems we do our jobs for everyone else–and often fail to do the same job for ourselves and families. In fitting with this stereotype it’s been a very long time since I reviewed and updated our family insurance portfolio!

We have been with the same insurance carrier for over 7-years and we haven’t shopped our insurance around since our oldest son, Sean had that little car accident several years ago. I am also sure that my husbands old speeding ticket must be off his record. When we were married in 1999 my credit was in the toilet and that’s been fixed up, so no better time then now to review and update our insurance policies.

We have also accumulated several things during the past few years. We didn’t sell my house when we got married so it’s a rental now, and we purchased a second rental two years ago. We moved to a new state, and a larger home and have purchased several things to put into the new home. Including that wonderful upgraded diamond ring my husband gave me for our 5th anniversary!

We adopted two special needs children and our little girl has some issues that could case us legal problems in the future. So we need to be sure we have liability insurance in place, and that our insurance company understands the full extent of the exposures we face.

Sean, the oldest is about to finish his masters degree and he has been driving the old Ford truck for the past year. It’s time to put him on his own policy and let him take over the responsibility of paying for his own insurance. Tori, is going on to get her Doctorate but, never has bothered to get a driver’s license so insurance for her needs is no longer going to be an issue.

It’s amazing how life changes in just a few short years. I am pretty sure our insurance agent doesn’t really know all the details and I am positive our insurance needs updated. This is something that I recommend people do each year–and here I am years late!

No matter who it is or what they have to insure it’s really very important to take the time and consider the insurance issues our families face and that changes our insurance agent or company have no way of knowing unless we do our part. If you are anything like me, its easy to say this needs to get done–and hard to actually start. So, today I will be making the first steps in updating our insurance.
