Just Do it!

If you have always wanted to try your hand at home decorating or home improvement, you should go for it. Maybe there’s a wild color you have always loved or a really cool technique that you have always wanted to try. If so, you should just do it.

Of course, you should gather plenty of information and get a little practice with techniques before attempting them on your walls or important pieces of furniture, but once you feel confident, you should do it. Try it out on an inexpensive piece of furniture or do only one wall until you’re sure you like it.

If it’s color you’re after, try adding your favorite color with fabric first. Make or use a slipcover, pillows, or window treatments in that awesome color to see how it will look in your space. Adding color with fabric is the simplest way to try out a color, and the simplest way to get rid of it if it doesn’t work for you. It’s much better than having to repaint.

If you do decide to paint, try one wall before doing the entire room or any pieces of furniture. Really intense colors don’t always play well on furniture, first of all, and you may find the color overpowering if you paint the entire space.

Paint one wall and then wait 24 hours to make a decision. See how it looks in the brightest sunlight of the day, how it looks at dusk, and how it looks with artificial lighting.

You may absolutely love it and paint everything in sight, or you may decide that one wall in that color is enough and makes a nice focal wall. You may also decide that your favorite color is best taken in smaller doses and that a subtle backdrop with just a few punches of color would be better. In that case, wait a few days and repaint the wall. Then, you can inject some of your wild color with accessories and accents.
