Keeping in Touch

phone When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time at a friend’s house. I noticed that her father called her mother every day at lunch time, just to touch base. I thought that was unusual—my mother and father didn’t do that.

The other day, I was on the phone with my sister when her cell phone rang. It was her husband, calling to see how her day was going. Now, with some life experience of my own, I thought it was sweet.

My husband and I don’t have the luxury of calling each other very often, but we do exchange a couple of e-mails a day. Why, you ask? Don’t we see each other in the mornings and in the evenings? Well, yes, but talking to each other during the day adds a little something extra. A touchstone, if you will. A moment of your day when you stop to think, “I’m loved. Someone cares how I am.”

Sending my husband a quick note during the day helps keep me grounded. When all heck’s breaking loose at home and I want to pull my hair out, I’ll just send him a smiley face or even a “Hi, how are you?” and it reminds me of the bigger picture—that we’re doing this because we love each other and we want to be a family. When he replies, I get warm fuzzies all over, and it gives me the strength to push through the rest of the day. And in all honesty, our lives are so crazy that sometimes, we do the bulk of our communicating through e-mail. Thank goodness for computers, or we’d never talk to each other.

Another advantage of keeping in touch throughout the day: it increases the likelihood that you’ll be faithful to your spouse and vice versa. When your spouse is foremost on your mind, your desire to remain true to them is increased.

If you haven’t had the chance to spend time with your spouse lately, pop them an e-mail. Place a quick call. Punch out a text. The workday might be almost over, but show them you care and want to communicate with them often, not just when the time clock is off.
