Keeping the Kids Entertained When it’s Snowy Outside with Snow Globes!

Remember how much fun snow globes were when you were a kid? You could shake the globe and watch the ‘snow’ sprinkle on a tiny little scene. It may not be snowing where you are now, but you can make your own globe featuring anything you wish. Young or young at heart, it’s a fun little project with a great outcome and a great way to pass an afternoon letting your kids be creative.

What’s great about making snow globes is that you can totally personalize it to make it your own original. You can add various colors of glitter instead of just one. Or how about adding seashells, food coloring or sports figurines too. Go through the bottom of the toy box with your kids and you’ll find a million little plastic pieces from toys that you may or may not have around any longer.
Get creative!

What you’ll need for this project are the following:
* Jar with tight fitting lid, any size is fine depending on how big a globe you want to make.

* Mineral oil, baby oil or water.
Tip: making your globe with oil will make your “snow” fall slower than it would with plain water.

* Decorative objects like bit of costume jewelry, or whatever you’d like to see bobbing around in your globe.

* Any waterproof figurines you’d like to see ‘standing’ at the base of your globe. And florist clay to hold it in place.

* Glitter or fake snow.
Tip: avoid super fine/ultra fine glitter because it has a tendency to just float back to the top and you can even use glow in the dark glitter for a different look.

* Glue gun or sealant.
Tip: A tube of aquarium sealant or plumbers pipe sealant works great.

Alright, lets get started!
1) Make sure your jar and lid is washed and completely dry.

2) If you’re using a figurine, you need to attach it to the inside of the lid using the florist clay. If the item is on the small side, then you might want to ‘build up’ the clay a bit to raise it up a bit.

3) Fill your jar with the water or oil to within about a half inch of the top.

4) Sprinkle about one tablespoon of glitter or ‘snow’ in the liquid. Feel free to use however much glitter or ‘snow’ you want!

5) Screw on lid tightly, and turn it over to make sure that you don’t want to add more glitter or ‘snow’ before you seal it.

6) Once you’re sure, flip it back over lid side up, and use your sealer around the outside of the lid where it meets the jar to ensure that it’s spill proof. Let stand lid side up overnight. Just to make sure everything is secure. If you’d like to, you can paint the lid or decorate it with ribbon. That’s all there is to it.

Kids have a great time doing this and each one is completely unique.
