Kicked Off Basketball

Our kids signed up for basketball this winter through our local recreation center my sons are at their second practice and my husband just called and said that the coach told him that my 10 year old son is not going to be allowed on the team because it is for 12 and under. He said that he should be on the team for 10 and unders. Now my 10 year old is the height of most 11 and 12 year old boys and the coach asked for him to be on his team but now he is saying that he can’t be on the team?

I waited for practice to end and I called the coach to ask what was going on. He told me that “we had a few boys added to our team that know how to play the game so your son who has no game is not going to be allowed on the team.” I politely explained that he already accepted him to the team and that he just cannot go and kick him off the team because he found more players that are better than him. I mean come on this is not the NBA or even a school team this is a team through the rec center.

He went on to say that he can’t kick my 12 year old off the team but that he will not be playing because he too has no game. Now when the coach made the first call to tell me that they were on his team I did let him know that they have never played on a team before, they do not know the rules but they have shot hoops in the front yard. The coach said that there were many kids on the team that were first year players so that would be just fine. The kids worked hard to get their grades up so they would be allowed to play on the team. We also hoped that the kids would lose weight while playing the game.

Now I have to tell my son that he cannot play on the team. When he came home I pulled him aside so we can talk and he said he thinks the coach kicked him off because he was too fat. Now the only thing that the coach did say about his physical appearance is that he was too short to be on the team. Well I think he may need glasses because my son was taller than 4 of the kids on the team.

How do I convince my son that he did not get kicked off because of his weight? I told him there is a flag football league that starts in February that I would love to sign him up for. That brought the smile back to his face for sure.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
