Kinky Freidman: A Different Voice For Texas

In this great country of ours, anyone can aspire to anything their heart desires and that includes the world of politics. Many celebrities and sports figures have turned their attentions and aspirations to the political arena. A former boxer is now the governor of Missouri, an actor the governor of California, and several actors have run for mayor of various California cities over the years, namely Clint Eastwood of Carmel and the late Sonny Bono. Another former actor, Ronald Reagan, was both a former governor and a former President of The United States, making this not only the land of opportunity but the land where no prior experience can get one elected to office.

Indeed, according to Kinky Friedman, who is running as the very first Jewish governor of the Lone Star State, the more “experience one has in politics, the worse one seems to perform while in office.” Who’s to say his thinking is wrong and that a successful writer and country singer, albeit an eccentric one, cannot be the next mayor of Texas? Only 29 percent of the population voted in the last gubernatorial election, leaving 71 per cent unimpressed and disinterested in the affairs of their state. Kinky feels this edge will work in his favor with both the youth and the rednecks, and there is no question that he has a cult following and many fans to support him.

He also is independent of everything and everybody, an unusual political stance. Dissatisfied with the accepted order of things, he is more than amenable for change. According to a recent interview on “Sixty Minutes”, he has two political platforms: gay marriage and education, two things that are not often promoted together in one campaign. Kinky says that “there is nor reason why gay people can’t be as miserable as everyone else, if they want to.” He also calls himself “the teacher’s best friend.” Almost everyone agrees that whoever he is or isn’t, he is honest about it.

A writer and successful country singer, Kinky is a 61 year old bachelor and animal activist. His “Utopia Rescue Ranch” houses sixty dogs, and Kinky refers to all of them as “The Friedmans.” One of his hit songs was a little number called: “They Don’t Make Jews Like Jesus Anymore.” Needless to say, his attitude does offend many, but it also finds a place in the hearts of many others who find his unabashed honesty not only refreshing but amazing and commendable for someone in the world of politics.

Kinky cares about Texas and many diehards agree with him, including mega singing star, Willie Nelson, who held a personal fund raiser for him. He promises to work for the people of Texas and could he really do any worse than any governor has done before? This is America after all and hats off to Kinky. May he reign in …interesting peace.
