Laboring on Labor Day

So did you get to enjoy having off on Labor Day? Not me…I was laboring. In fact, I was squeezing in two days worth of work so my schedule could be cleared for Tuesday. My husband and I spent the day together in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary. But I was okay with laboring on Labor Day. My husband had to work anyway, so it wasn’t that big of a deal.

I can always arrange to have a day off during the week by doing that day’s work over the weekend, instead. But I really like to try and keep my weekends free and as it turns out so often, sometimes I do end up working over the weekend.

Because I am a writer, even if it’s not my paid writing assignments that I work on, then I find myself doing other things. For instance, this Labor Day weekend I also had a newsletter for my church to get out, a book review to write, an introductory email to a group of ladies I will be leading in an online writing critique group and my two personal blogs.

I think for most of us, no matter what type of home business you have, it’s really hard to take off on those days that the rest of the world does. Actually, if you think about it, Labor Day has become more about doing labor than anything else. Think of all the stores and restaurants that are open.

Even if I did have plans for Labor Day, we would likely not be doing them until later in the day. So I could just as easily work in the morning and probably have it done before the fun began.

I think it’s easy to have such a carefree attitude about all of this because I love my work. If I was being forced to go into my job on Labor Day and hated it, well, that would be an entirely different story.

What about you? Did you have to work Labor Day and if you did, were you okay with that?
