If you believe some online travel forums you’d think there wasn’t a deal to be had. And, what’s more, even if there were some available no one would want to take them because the summer travel season has been nothing less than a bust. Admittedly, massive flight delays, and overbooking, along with rude airline employees, record-high hotel rates and sky-high gas prices have all made headlines in the past couple of months, but that shouldn’t put a damper on your last minute travel plans. If you are flexible and alert you may be able to end your summer on a happy travel note.
When it comes to finding reasonable airfares my motto is: “Never give up.” Persistence is key. I regularly visit several online travel sites and track their rates. I’m not saying that I hit the jackpot all the time, but again, if you remain flexible you can walk away with a “bargain.” For example, for the last three months coach fares to Europe have averaged around $1,000. With that in mind you basically have to readjust your thinking regarding what constitutes as a “good” fare. That’s why when I saw Air Canada was offering a New York-London rate for $620 (with tax) a few days ago I instantly thought: BARGAIN!
As we get into the last couple weeks of summer you can expect fares to Europe from major U.S. hubs to decrease. The same with travel to Mexico. For instance, if wait to take your vacation during the last week in August you can get four nights at select Westins and Sheratons in Mexico through American Airlines Vacations starting at $280 per person (that includes airfare).
Rentalo.com, a website that matches vacationers with rental properties, is also offering some outstanding late summer travel deals for properties in Florida and South Carolina. I found a two-bedroom, beachfront condo in Myrtle Beach for the last week of August for $99 a night.
Lastminute.com is also a helpful website that sells travel packages three weeks to three hours before departure at deep discounts. The site is currently offering a deal to Negril, Jamaica from New York for $482. Travel must be complete by August 1st and the rate includes round-trip air and lodging.
