Let’s Feed the Birds

Do you love birds? If you do, and even if you have never had too much interest in birds, you should think about drawing more birds to your yard. They are fascinating creatures. They are beautiful to look at, interesting to watch, and many of them sing charming songs.

If you have kids, they will love watching birds flitter through the yard or garden, and play or feed. To make your yard inviting to birds, put out bird feeders.

You can make your own simple bird feeders, with these project ideas. Your children will enjoy helping you make them, and they’re easy enough for even small children to do.

Hi-Ho Cheerios

String Cheerios cereal (regular flavor) on a piece of twine or yarn. The strand can be as long as you’d like it to be. It can be bracelet or necklace size, or it can be the length of a garland. For small strands, simply tie both ends together and hang each loop from a tree. For longer strands, knot each end then tie one end to a low branch. Wrap the strand around the branch and continue until your reach the end. Tie that end to the branch as well.

Everybody Loves Bagels

Slip a piece of yarn or string through the hole in a bagel. Mix one part peanut butter and one part margarine and spread this mixture all over the bagel, front and back. If you can’t use peanut butter, spread it with shortening. Next, cover the bagel in birdseed. You can roll it in the seed or place it in a closed container with birdseed and shake it until it is evenly coated. Hang the bagel outside where you can see it from a door or window.

If you’d like to purchase a structured bird feeder, there are many different options. Check your local garden center or home improvement center, or take a look online.
