Let’s Talk About Pregnancy Intuition 1

Sensing a Pregnancy

“Are you in there little fetus?
In 9 months will you come greet us?
I will buy you some ADIDAS!”

Does everyone remember Phoebe from the hit show FRIENDS? She sang this song while sitting upside down on a sofa, after being implanted with the embryos of her brother and his wife. She offered to be their surrogate carrier, and although I knew I was pregnant and carrying my own fetus, I found myself humming this little song quite often during those first weeks. And yes, I will be buying some ADIDAS. But since baby is very young still, it will be some time before I do.

At 3 1/2 weeks -the point at which I realized I was pregnant- a due date at 40 weeks seemed light-years away. But I know as well as anyone that these times of our lives pass quicker than we imagine they will. Still, my second pregnancy manifested itself much differently than the previous one, almost swifter in a way. I didn’t even suspect I was pregnant until the tenth week on the first time around (talk about denial!). Of course, I was no less serious about it as the second, once that positive test result was obtained.

This time though, I suspected pregnancy even before missing a period. I must say, what an interesting notion it is to have an intuitive feeling about your own body. I even had a dream, a week before my period was due, that I was giving birth and delivered a healthy baby boy! To later find out I was in fact pregnant made me feel almost clairvoyant, although I get the feeling that women have experienced phenomena such as this since the dawn of time.

I once had a friend that not only had a similar dream to mine, but was told the baby’s name by the child itself. She obviously named the child the dream name, because who would mess with such a clear sign from Fate? Another woman I know suspected she was pregnant because the consistency of her bowel movements changed! Still other women have expressed having an immediate Aha! moment at the exact time of conception. I certainly had no Aha! moment for either of my pregnancies, but a suspicion was definitely present sooner for the second one. It’s wonderful to know that not only do our parenting skills ripen with experience, but so do our intuitions – sometimes right down to the moment of conception.
