Let’s Talk About Pregnancy Intuition 2

Boy or Girl?

I’ve been pregnant two times, and with both babies I chose to wait until their birth to find out their sex. I think waiting to find out is like unwrapping the ultimate present (and I also think that ultrasounds are dangerous – but that’s another article). Both times I crossed my fingers and hoped for a boy. Both times I was blissfully blind-sided with beautiful baby girls.

During my first pregnancy, I wanted a boy because I was under the impression that they were low-maintenance and fun. I was sort of a tom-girl myself, and having to put a girl in pink didn’t excite me too much. I started looking for signs of what I was carrying, and everything pointed to boy. People at work said I was “carrying a certain way and it must be a boy”! Much to my dismay, I had pregnancy acne so “it must be a boy with all that testosterone causing my acne”!

When I was about 4 months pregnant and not showing one bit, I was in the check-out lane of a store and the ethnic woman at the cash register told me I was pregnant (as if I didn’t know). I asked her how she could tell, and she claimed that it was in the way my neck looked. She said that I was carrying a boy and that she knew because of my neck. That just about sealed it for me!

Then came the sure-fire test: Drano. It’s been said that this test is fail-proof, but for me it bombed big time. Feel free to try it yourself.
You will need:
• 2 tablespoons of Crystal Drano
• A few ounces of fresh urine (ew!)
• Medium glass or glass jar (preferably one you don’t intend to use again)
Do this test outside, it will smell badly and you shouldn’t be breathing this in your condition. Pour the Drano into the glass or glass jar. Then pour an equal amount of urine into the glass or glass jar. There are several touted indicators of the baby’s sex, so it’s hard to really say if this test is accurate. Some say that if the concoction becomes nasty smelling, and darkens to a brownish color within the first 10 seconds, IT’S A BOY and if it just sits there for more than 10-15 seconds, IT’S A GIRL! Other variations include:
Green=boy, red=girl
Green=boy, yellow=girl
blue=boy, brown=girl
blue=boy, yellow=girl and so on.

I don’t even remember what my color was, but I remember that it was opposite from girl and I was happy! So I told everyone I was carrying a boy, picked out a somewhat masculine (although still not gender-specific) nursery theme, and started putting together a scrapbook that said “boy” in it and was filled with blue. I had a boy name all picked out and ready to go (a girl’s too, though).

A lot can change in an instant. It was a girl, and she came cooing into my heart on a May evening, changing me forever. Several things about me changed that day or since: I no longer trust old wives tales and therefore went through my second pregnancy without worrying about the sex of my baby. I now embrace my girly-ness, which I suppose is bound to happen when you truly become a woman in every sense of the word. I am even known to wear pink or put pink on my girls now. I am ecstatic to have two girls that can share everything. And I no longer wish for a boy, because my two girls complete me.
