Living With In-Laws

Marriage can be a big adjustment for some couples. It can take time to learn to live with someone else without stepping on each other’s toes. Not having your own place can add even more to this confusion. Thankfully my husband and I have not had to live with anyone. However, I know many couples that in some point of their marriage they have had to live with their parents.

Couples have to or choose to live with their parents for several different reasons. Sometimes a couple chooses to live with their parents to save money. They choose not to pay a house payment or rent. Instead they stay in the house with parents until they have enough money saved to get a place of their own.

In other cases, I know couples that have lived with parents while they are remodeling or building a house. They do not have the need to sign a one-year lease to rent a place to live. Therefore, they live with parents until their home is finished.

One couple that I know put their house up for sale. The house sold much more quickly than they ever expected. They had planned on relocating and buying another house. However, they had not even begun to shop for a new home. Therefore, they moved in with his parents until they could find a house that hey both agreed to buy.

Your spouse may not think much about living with his/her parents. However, you will think much more about living with in-laws. The privacy is completely gone. You may not feel comfortable to get up and walk around the house in your underwear like you would in your own home. You also have lack of storage space. In most cases, you are limited to one room. Therefore you must place your things in storage. You may also feel uncomfortable about romantic relations.

Before asking your spouse to consider moving in with your parents, think about the potential stress that it could cause on your marriage. Discuss all possibilities with your spouse and make sure that the two of you are own the same page. Also talk with the parents and set-up ground rules and guidelines. Who pays for what and who buys groceries? What types of boundaries will you have?
