Livingroom Cam

Come inside the home of a family that lets you peek in, turn the lights on and off and visit for the holidays.

I first came across the Livingroom Cam back in 2000. I usually stay away from cams on the web simply because of the tendency for many of them to be pornographic, and well, I’m usually too busy with my own life to peer into the lives of others.

Back in the 90s and very early 2000s, web cameras really took off. Remember the infamous JenniCam and AnnaCam, where young women allowed voyeurs into their lives? It seemed that everyone had a cam of one sort of another, even yours truly. I installed a cam in my office and then later moved it to the living room of my boyfriend’s apartment, where lucky viewers could watch me write, design websites and even clean. Whoo hoo! But this isn’t about me. Not really.

The Livingroom Cam is one of those classic cams that I return to once or twice a year, just to keep in touch. It is easy to feel part of the family with this cam. It is completely family friendly, with the most unsavory thing being catching someone’s clothed backside as they pass the camera.

But this cam really isn’t about the people anyway, who hardly ever show up for view. It is more about the living room and the kitchen, where visitors can play with the lights. What a cool concept, although it might drive me batty if I were the family who owned this cam.

The holidays is really when this cam shine, literally. It becomes transformed into the Christmas Cam complete with more lights and a tastefully decorated tree. One year, the website claims, they caught Santa on the cam. Apparently the old guy found out because he hasn’t been seen on the camera again. But who knows? Maybe you can catch him yourself this year.
