Long Summer Nights

Summertime can be just as busy for many married couples as the rest of year. Few of us get to really enjoy the summer vacation that our kids do. Remember the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer that began at the end of May and lasted until the end of August? We had a three month moratorium on worrying about anything except sunburn and mosquitoes?

Inject a Little Romance into the Summer Heat

Our romance is dependent on our creativity, especially when we’re busy, hot and tired. We need to find creative ways to keep our romance alive and kicking. Today I want to share some ideas with you for keeping the romance alive for you and your spouse. Some are big, some are small, but all are doable at home and all they need is a little effort.

After Dinner Drinks

Nope, not endorsing alcohol here though I do enjoy a good frozen daquiri with or without the alcohol and most of the time without because I am simply not able to drink since I had my daughter. Anyway, the point is, many couples don’t sit down to dinner anymore. Most of us do buffet style eating, where we quickly eat food and dart off to our personal activities or worse, back to the front of the television. If you can’t sit down to eat together, retreat to your back porch with a couple of cool drinks and enjoy the cooling down of the day.

There’s something incredibly intimate about sitting still, listening to the cicadas, watching the sun dip towards the horizon and having a cold drink while chatting about the day, the yard or how nice it is to just sit there together. Whether it lasts 30 minutes or an hour, it’s a good time for a couple to take to themselves.

Evening Strolls

On of the things I have observed during our evening sojourns on the back porch are the number of couples who go out for a walk together in the evening. Some have kids, some have dogs, some have both and some have neither; but they are all out walking together and enjoying an evening stroll. It’s neat to listen to the sounds of conversation drifting across the fence line along with the murmurs of laughter. What’s more, many of these couples are holding hands and smiling. What does that say to you?

The Late Show

I know the era of Johnny Carson is long since gone, but years ago, I remember staying up to watch the Late Show because it was fun to watch. Every once in a while, we will flip on the channel to either Leno or Letterman or a repeat of Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. It’s fun to laugh before you go to sleep, after an especially long day – we don’t debate politics in the house – but we do like to lampoon them. We have differences of opinion at time and at others we enjoy similar views. Ultimately, watching the sketches and opening monologues make us laugh and when we go to bed with a smile on our face, it’s nice to share that with someone we love.

Romance is in the Eye of the Beholder

Are all of these romantic? Sometimes. But romance should promote closeness and bonding together – all of these encourage us to spend time together and that’s the biggest hurdle towards rediscovering romance with each other – the time to do it.

How do you like to spend a warm summer evening?
