Look Who’s Turning 50

This is a big year for several celebrities – the big 50. You might be surprised to see who is turning 50 this year:

Madonna

Yes, it’s true – the Material Girl just turned 50 on August 16th, amid reports that her marriage was over due to an affair with Yankee Alex Rodriguez. However, 2008 was also a good year for Madonna, as she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March.

Grandmaster Flash

In 2007, this pioneering hip hop musician and DJ, along with the Furious Five, was the first hip hop/rap artist to be inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Prince

I couldn’t believe it when I saw the Jet magazine cover that said that Prince, listed as #28 on the Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, turned 50 this June. He beat Madonna to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by four years.

Ellen DeGeneres

Yes, the newlywed talk show host turned 50 in January of this year.

Ice-T

In his fifty years, Ice-T has transformed from gangsta rapper to Law & Order regular.

Mary Chapin Carpenter

This country music star has won five Grammys. She is also the only one to have won Best Female Country Vocal Performance four years in a row.

Sharon Stone

This Academy Award nominated actress made a big splash on the big screen in the 1994 flick Basic Instinct.

Prince Albert of Monaco

The eldest son of actress Grace Kelly and ruler of Monaco turned 50 on March 14.

Holly Hunter

This Academy Award winning actress now appears on TNT’s “Saving Grace.”

Gary Oldman

This English actor, writer, director, and producer was the first husband of actress Uma Thurman.

Bart Conner

Bart won Olympic gold in 1984 for the parallel bars and as part of the men’s gymnastic team. In 1996, Bart married fellow gold medalist Nadia Comaneci.

Alec Baldwin

Alec, riding high as Jack Donaghy on “30 Rock,” turned 50 on April 3.

Stay tuned for my next blog to find out who else turns 50 this year.

About Libby Pelham

I have always loved to write and Families.com gives me the opportunity to share my passion for writing with others. I work full-time as a web developer at UTHSC and most of my other time is spent with my son (born 2004). I love everything pop culture, but also enjoy writing about green living (it has opened my eyes to many things!) and health (got to worry about that as you get older!).
