Looking For My Waist: There Should Be Dancing!

I went dancing last night. I am sure this sounds like no biggie, but you have to understand that his was HUGE for me. I have always prided myself on being the person that has thrown all black (African American) stereotypes to the wind. For one, I have no rhythm and I am proud of it. Nope, I can’t dance.

For the last 14+ years of my marriage and the 6 years of dating that preceded, my poor husband has had to drag me onto the dance floor kicking and screaming, and then take the horrible assault on his feet. After taking the obligatory, first or second dance with my husband, I have always handed him over to a partner who could keep up. If I was lucky, one of his cousins was around.

Last night, his pain and suffering was ended. We took Salsa dance lessons. I started out in the corner of the room sure, no, determined that I would never get it. But guess what?! I caught on quickly and we ended up in the middle of the dance floor shaking our groove things!

With his brother getting married this summer, we set a goal. We both want to look fabulous, and he wants to show the world his wife can dance! We will practice together (when he is home from traveling) and show off my new skills at the wedding. His cousin would lose her favorite dancing partner this year!

Oh, but we are supposed to be blogging about weight loss! Well…

Dancing burns more calories than walking. Walking at 3 miles per hour (a 20-minute mile, and my best speed) burns 280 calories for the average person. However, dancing is akin to aerobic activity and burns 420 calories. If I practice for a half hour everyday by myself, and an hour on the weekends when he is home, then I am exercising and having fun! I think adding a good stretching video to my daily exercise will round out my efforts for now.
