Low Cost Low Carb

Low carb eating is still a popular trend for weight loss, although it can be very expensive. For some, it’s worth the extra cost because they can lose weight without feeling hungry or deprived. You can enjoy those benefits too, but without spending a fortune.

There are many foods that are naturally low in carbs and you can purchase whole foods for less than the price of processed foods. For example, a dozen eggs costs very little and eggs are a good source of protein. Eggs don’t have to be reserved for the breakfast table. An omelet makes a great lunch or light supper. A hard boiled egg is a good choice for an afternoon snack and can also be chopped up for use as a salad topping.

Tuna is another good source of low carb, high protein food. It is inexpensive and it has the added benefit of containing “good fats” that are essential for your health. Tuna can be used as a substitute in many chicken recipes or it can be eaten straight from the can, added to salads, or made into sandwiches.

Speaking of sandwiches, watch out for high priced low carb breads. All bread contains some carbs and many do not have the fiber content you might expect. Choose 100% whole wheat or other whole grain breads instead of paying for the “low carb” label. You should be able to save about $1.00 per loaf, and sometimes even more. Find out if there’s a thrift bakery in your area and look there for even greater savings. You can often purchase delicious, name brand, whole grain bread for about $1.00 per loaf.

Instead of paying a fortune for nut oils such as almond or macadamia nut oil that some claim you must have, opt for olive oil. If you find olive oil too expensive, try pure canola oil instead. It costs about the same amount as typical cooking oils.
