In previous blogs I’ve told you about some of my camping “adventures.” I wouldn’t consider any of them “luxury,” even though the hottest new trend in camping is lodging in high-end accommodations. (Yes, gone are the days of “roughing it.”) These days more and more families are opting to camp in a variety of spectacular locations with added amenities.
The following properties combine the best of camping with creature comforts. Consider ditching the pup tent and soggy marshmallows and gear up for deluxe bungalows, maid service, and working showers… at a price even the most budget conscious camper couldn’t resist.
CALIFORNIA
Costanoa eco-adventure resort, located just one hour south of San Francisco is currently offering an incredible deal for people who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, but don’t always feel like becoming one with nature. The resort is located at the center of one of the most ruggedly beautiful stretches of California’s coast. It includes a 40-room lodge, a restaurant and a spa, but if you really want to “rough it” then consider signing up for one of the tent bungalows. The wood or metal frame “tents” come with waterproof canvas walls, electricity, sliding windows and heated mattress pads. You’ll also have access to a “comfort station,” which includes restrooms; hot showers; heated concrete floors; a dry sauna; and an outdoor fireplace. Nightly rates for the tents start at $115 on weeknights, $130 on weekends.
HAWAII
If you are looking for some high class camping options in paradise look no further than the Lodge & Beach Village at Molokai Ranch. The property encompasses 65,000 acres of coastal pastureland (where you can ride horses or mountain bikes or skeet shoot) on the tiny Hawaiian Island of Molokai. Along with a 22-room lodge, the property offers 40 two-bedroom tentalows situated on a white sand beach. Each of the solar-powered units sits on a raised platform with lounge chairs, deck seating, and a covered picnic table. The best part–the tentalows have maid service! Rates start at $358/night and include breakfast and dinner.
MONGOLIA
If you really want to get away from it all then book a trip to the Three Camel Lodge in Mongolia’s legendary Gobi Desert. The luxurious wilderness camp is situated amidst the world-renown Gobi’s Gurvansaikhan National Park. The 50-acre camp features 30 private tents with wood-burning stoves and hand-painted wooden furniture. You can spend your days taking guided tours through Mongolia’s varied terrain – lunar landscapes, mountain valleys, and the red sandstone Flaming Cliffs. At night, Mongolian singers perform for campers. Rates start at $70/night per person.
