Is leather truly better?
If I were independently wealthy I would seriously consider placing my memories exclusively in leather scrapbooks. I love the look, smell and feel of leather goods, and scrapbooks are no exception. Unfortunately, genuine leather memory books are a bit pricey. Still, if you have the means, I would highly suggest preserving your prized photos and memorabilia in leather books.
In addition to looking extremely attractive, leather albums are typically more durable than scrapbooks made from vinyl or canvas fabric. Moreover, if you are scrapping items that you want to keep for generations to come, leather albums can provide the heirloom quality you desire.
Leather albums come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from standard 12×12 scrapbooks to 3×3 brag books. The upscale albums also feature an array of different designs. For example, my local scrapbook store sells three-ring leather albums. Like a traditional binder, the large D-rings keep the pages in place. The downside to this type of album is that it’s not expandable. Once the rings are full, the book’s capacity is met and you’ll need to buy a new scrapbook.
Another option is the post bound leather scrapbook. This is the standard in the world of scrapbooking. It uses a post and screw system, which allows you to create a layout on your workspace, and then slide it into the plastic page protector. This design allows you to easily add more pages, by purchasing post extensions. If you don’t want to deal with taking layouts in and out of the book, then consider buying a strap-hinge album. The scrapbook works by threading two straps through a set of small metal hinges on the back of each page. The pages are made of heavy cardstock and come with plastic page protectors. With this type of album, you can create your layout directly in the book.
The most inexpensive leather scrapbooks I’ve seen are spiral-bound. Basically, they are fancy versions of the notebooks that are sold at most stationary stores. They are priced lower than the other versions because they don’t include plastic page projectors.
